As Vatican Explores Idea of Extra-Terrestrial Life, Catholic Sci-Fi is Already There
Simi Valley, CA--Last week, the Vatican called in experts to discuss the possibility of life on other planets, but for years, the editing team of Karina and Robert Fabian have been exploring the future of the Catholic Faith in light of extra-terrestrials and other science fiction themes.
The Fabians edited an anthology of Catholic science fiction, Infinite Space, Infinite God, which won an EPPIE award in 2007 for best science fiction and placed second in the Editors and Preditors Poll for best sci-fi in 2008. Their next anthology, Infinite Space, Infinite God II, is scheduled for April 2010. Both are published by Twilight Times Books.
Long-time science fiction fans as well as Catholics, they don't see any contradiction between their religion and science. "Most people don't realize how many devout Catholics throughout history were also scientists. People tend to think of Galileo and pass judgment, but Copernicus was a monk, as was Mendel, father of genetics. The conference the Vatican hosted last week is just one of many scientific conferences it's held," Karina Fabian said.
The first anthology explores how the Catholic faith has influenced and been influenced by the scientific and technological progress of man, and presents stories speculating on the challenges the Catholic Church will face when things like cloning and genetic engineering become reality, or when humankind finally reaches out beyond our planet and to the stars. The second anthology has a more adventure and heroism focus.
Of course, Fabian said, it's all just fun speculation. "We looked for stories that first and foremost, entertained. We got lucky that they also provoke thought and discussion. So even though we're exploring issues, we're doing it while lost in space, being forced back in time, encountering aliens, even seeking out a murderer. Faith, at its best, is active. It drives a person, and that's what we wanted to show in our stories."
Between the two anthologies, there are 30 stories by over 20 authors, many of whom have published stories and novels elsewhere. "We've been blessed with great talents," Fabian said. Fabian herself is an award-winning fantasy author and editor, as well as President of the Catholic Writers' Guild from 2006-2009.
